Gary passed peacefully on September 12, 2022.
Born to George and Barbara (Freund) Gilpin in Woodstock, IL on May 9, 1957. Gary attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in McHenry. He attended Marian Central Catholic HS in Woodstock where he was an outstanding athlete in shotput and discus and football. He continued to enjoy participate in men’s 16” softball league in McHenry on the Old Bridge and St. Regis teams. He was well-known as a power home run hitter. Gary was a lifelong avid Chicago sports fan especially the Cubs, Blackhawks, and Bears.
Gary was known to perform “My Way” and “Piano Man” even when not requested to do so. He was the “Head Spin” in a local quartet known as the Spins. They were best known for their performance at Fiesta Days 1981. Gary loved his hometown and was well-known to support various small businesses in McHenry. His nickname was Gulps.
He worked for the City of McHenry in the Public Works Department for more than 30 years. One of his favorite duties in the winter months was plowing snow, especially during the big storms!
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Herbert and Hilda (Weber) Freund and Walter and Henrietta (Hanke) Gilpin Hawley; nephew Joseph Decker, former brother-in-law and friend Brett (Mary Jo) Decker.
Survived by Mary Jo Gilpin Decker, Skip (Cindy Rivera), Gina Gilpin Miller (Mike) nephew Jason Gilpin (Heather), niece Brenna Decker, Uncle Richard Gilpin and many dearly-loved cousins.

Visitation will be at St. Mary’s Church on Thursday September 15, from 10:00am until 12:00pm. The funeral mass will be at 12:00pm followed by the burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. A celebration of life for friends and family will begin at 2:00pm at the VFW in McHenry

I hadn’t seen Gary since our 20 year class reunion from
St Mary’s! I remember him as my brother Matthew’s fishing buddy! The Gilpins are a fond memory for me. They were terrific neighbors. I’m sorry to read of his passing. I think of Gary and the smile he could always put on my face. Sleep with the Angels my friend!
